'It doesn't look good': Mansfield Town dealt injury blow ahead of Notts County clash
Mansfield Town could be looking at a significant injury blow following the latest club fitness updates from Andy Garner.
Liam Thompson’s fitness status is currently in a concerning grey area as the club wait to find out the severity of his injury.
The midfielder came off against Blackpool at half-time and Nigel Clough confirmed after the match that it was due to a problem with his calf.
First team coach Andy Garner provided an update on the squad’s fitness levels during this week’s pre-Notts County press conference and there was some worry surrounding Thompson.

“We’re waiting on Thommo, he’s having a scan but it doesn’t look good. That will be a blow,” Garner said. “Hopefully it will be good news rather than bad but I can’t see it really. If he is out for a bit of time, it’s a big loss for us because I think he’s been fantastic ever since he’s come to the club.”
Thompson has started every League One match since his arrival at Mansfield Town over the summer. The 24-year-old was a highly sought-after target and he made an instant impact in his debut against Doncaster. Since then, he has been key in Stags’ performances.
Stephen McLaughlin was also swapped out for the second half against Blackpool after picking up a hip issue.
“Macca has a little knock on his hip. He’s not going to train today but he will train tomorrow – he’ll be fine to train tomorrow,” Garner said on Tuesday.
The same was also said about George Abbott, who was replaced by Regan Hendry on the hour mark on Saturday after picking up a knock on his back. He will return to training on Wednesday.
“David McGoldrick is still doing his work, so he will probably be another three weeks,” Garner continued.
McGoldrick is currently working through a knee injury and hasn’t featured since the draw with Burton Albion last month. Meanwhile, both Lucas Akins and Baily Cargill remain out of action, with no updates given on their potential return.
