Mansfield care home slammed over safety and staffing issues

A Mansfield care home was found to be in breach of the legal regulations relating to safe care and treatment by CQC inspectors.

Magnolia House Residential Care Home was given a ‘requires improvement’ overall rating after Care Quality Commission (CQC) inspectors identified a number of concerns that meant people were not always receiving “consistently safe, person-centred care.”

Inspectors visited the home in Chesterfield Road North, Pleasley between September 1 and September 14 and found “The provider was in breach of the legal regulations relating to safe care and treatment, good governance and restrictive practices.”

According to the report published on October 23 the home was given a ‘requires improvement’ rating in the safe, responsive and well lead categories and ‘good’ in the effective and caring categories.

The report stated: “The assessment identified a number of concerns that meant people were not always receiving consistently safe, person-centred care. Risks were not always effectively assessed, managed or reviewed, and some incidents had not been reported to relevant agencies.

"People raised concerns about other people entering their bedrooms, delays in receiving support at busy times, and limited involvement in decisions about their care. Care plans were not always up to date or sufficiently detailed to guide staff in meeting people's needs safely.”

Inspectors also found concerns relating to medicines management, infection prevention and control, and aspects of the environment.

The report added: “Quality assurance and governance systems were not effective in identifying and addressing these issues, resulting in missed opportunities to improve outcomes and learn from incidents.”

Issues surrounding staffing levels and staff turnover were also identified.

The report added: “While staff felt able to raise concerns; improvements were needed to strengthen leadership, oversight, communication, risk management and person-centred care to ensure people consistently received safe, high-quality support.”

Praise was given about the kindness and caring nature of staff, the cleanliness of the home and the range of activities available at the service that provides care for elderly residents including those with dementia.

At the time of the assessment, 59 people were living at Magnolia House.

A spokesman for the care home said: “We take the feedback from CQC seriously and are committed to making the necessary improvements, building on the many positive aspects of the care and support we provide.”
