The gifted students played a key role in one of the most significant science and education events ever hosted across the country at the town’s Sherwood Observatory.

It saw learners and college ambassadors at the heart of the British Association of Planetaria’s (BAP) Annual Conference 2026 by providing high-quality catering and hospitality services throughout the event.

Liz Barrett OBE DL, Principal of ATTFE College, said: "We are delighted to have supported this seminal event, which is so important for Sherwood Observatory and the wider region. Above all, it is priceless that our learners can be involved in significant national STEM events while simultaneously developing their own skills, confidence and capabilities.

"Opportunities like this allow students to experience professional expectations first-hand and demonstrate the outstanding talent, commitment and professionalism they bring to every challenge."

Working behind the scenes and front of house, learners developed and showcased essential employability skills including food preparation, organisation, communication, teamwork, customer service and professional presentation.

The annual BAP conference is recognised as one of the sector's most important gatherings, bringing together planetarium professionals, educators and technology specialists to share knowledge, explore innovations and strengthen collaboration across the UK and international planetarium community.

Simon Martin MBE, Senior Executive Leader at ATTFE College, said: "This was an astronomical international symposium of real significance, and it was an honour for ATTFE College to provide core support in the way that we did.

"The event further reinforces ATTFE's place within the community and demonstrates how education, skills and local partnerships can come together to benefit learners, stakeholders and the wider region."

For many of the students involved, the conference provided a memorable experience that will strengthen their confidence and enhance their future career prospects.

Louise Davy, Head of Programme of Study at ATTFE College, added: "Events like BAP 2026 provide our learners with invaluable opportunities to put their skills into practice in a live environment.

“Our students were involved in every stage of that process. They showed tremendous commitment and professionalism, and it has been fantastic to see their confidence grow throughout the event. To be able to say they helped cater for a major international conference at such an incredible venue is something they can take enormous pride in."
