A Ricky Miller hat-trick staked him a firm claim for a first team start at the weekend as Mansfield Town reserves beat Rotherham United 5-2 at Brooksby Melton College this afternoon.

Miller netted three times in 28 second half minutes to win the game just when it seemed the Stags were in trouble at 2-2 after they had seen Lewis Gibbens sent off for a foul on 71 minutes.

Instead they coasted home to remain top of the Central League North B table.

The game had to be moved from the usual Kirklington Road ground at Rainworth due to a waterlogged pitch.

Stags went ahead on 32 minutes when Miller set up Paul Anderson but paid for missing other openings when Joshua Koyode headed United level four minutes after the break.

Miller’s poaching instincts restored Stags’ advantage on 56 minutes before Jerry Yates levelled on 65 minutes.

Paul Digby then set up Miller for his second on 72 minutes and, after hitting the bar, his hat-trick came on 76 minutes before Jason Law added a fifth at the end.
