Conservation scheme for deteriorating listed building -- latest Mansfield plans
The sprucing-up of a historic grade II listed building features on the latest list of planning applications received by Mansfield District Council.
Hardstaff Homes, on Priory Road in Mansfield Woodhouse, was built back in 1914 to provide retirement homes for local miners, and it was given listed status 40 years ago because of its significant architectural style.
Nowadays, the 15 almshouses offer a mix of bungalows and flats for people over the age of 50 and are particularly suitable for those with disabilities.
However, the weather has gradually taken its toll on the roofs of some of the properties. Therefore, the Nottingham Community Housing Association, which manages Hardstaff Homes, has submitted a planning application to the council to remove and replace some of the slate roof coverings in a “conservation-led project”.

The application is for listed building consent to refurbish and renew the roofs of two residential blocks, each comprising four dwellings, to prevent any further deterioration.
A planning statement says the slate would be carefully removed by hand and any considered defective would be replaced to closely match the original.
"The intention is to retain the existing character of the roof,” the statement says. “To address deterioration, maintain the buildings in a secure and watertight condition and extend the useful life of the existing roof fabric.”
The council’s planning officers are currently considering the proposal and hope to make a decision or recommendation by their deadline date of Wednesday, December 23.
