Conditions began to deteriorate soon after Mark Stoneman, the Durham captain, had won the toss and asked the home side to bat first.

A heavy thunderstorm, lasting for around half an hour, left the ground under water and despite the best efforts of the ground staff it quickly became apparent that the match had to be abandoned.

Ben Stokes had been due to continue his recuperation from knee surgery by playing for Durham as a batsman and fellow England international Stuart Broad was also in line to feature for the home side.

Notts were also giving a seasonal debut to Imran Tahir, with the South African leg spinner having flown in to join the county that he played for, briefly, towards the end of last season.

The result leaves both sides with one point; lifting Notts on to nine points from eight matches, whilst Durham’s abandonment was their second in consecutive evenings. They have eight points from nine matches.
