She says residents’ gardens in the Abbey Road area were affected and the stench was ‘absolutely appalling’.

A special meeting to discuss the problem was attended by Sherwood Conservative MP Mark Spencer, Gedling Borough Council and Nottinghamshire County Council member Coun Chris Barnfather (Con) and Robert Fisher, the county council’s group manager responsible for emergency management.

A representative of Severn Trent Water was expected but did not turn up.

Jane Daniel, who lives on Abbey Road, said: “I had to drive through the sewage. It was horrible.” She added that one drain in the area involved was still ‘completely blocked’.

The complaint may be raised at a meeting about flooding issues in Nottinghamshire, to be held at Rainworth Village Hall tomorrow (Saturday). A suggestion was also made to form a committee in Newstead to deal with such emergencies as flooding.

At a meeting of the parish council, Coun Mrs Wise said it was hoped to set up a neighbourhood watch scheme in Newstead following a number of burglaries.

Four incidents occurred in one night at the homes of elderly people living alone.

in the village.

One of the victims was 100 years old and another was 93.

The idea is being supported by the police, Gedling Homes and Gedling Council, while a neighbourhood watch group in Ravenshead have offered to help.
