Bank of England expert returns to Mansfield to inspire next generation
Students at West Nottinghamshire College have gained a fascinating insight into the workings of the Bank of England during a special visit from a senior manager whose own educational journey began in Mansfield.
Tarkus Frost, senior manager for trade and risk at the Bank of England, returned to his hometown on Wednesday, October 14 to speak to A Level and business studies students at the college’s Mansfield and Ashfield Sixth Form College, on Chesterfield Road.
The visit gave students the chance to learn about the central bank’s role, the financial system and career and apprenticeship opportunities. Mr Frost, who grew up and attended school in Mansfield, also studied at West Nottinghamshire College before going to Loughborough University, where he completed a degree in economics.
He joined the Bank of England in 2005 and has worked in monetary policy, financial stability and risk management. He explained how the bank maintains monetary and financial stability, including setting interest rates, overseeing banks and insurance companies and responding to major economic challenges.

Mr Frost also described his involvement in the 2008 banking crisis and the introduction of quantitative easing in 2009, when the Bank of England began purchasing assets to support the economy. He outlined his current responsibilities, including managing financial risks linked to the bank’s balance sheet, developing investment strategies and providing treasury and risk advice.
Students took part in quizzes and an open question-and-answer session covering economic policy, financial crises, working life at the bank and the skills needed for a career in finance.
Tom Herrett, 17, who studies A Levels in politics, history, philosophy and business studies, said the visit opened his eyes to the powers and responsibilities of the Bank of England and its career opportunities.
Curriculum area lead Judith Stockwell said Frost made complex topics accessible and was a good role model because he is local to Mansfield and studied at West Notts College.
