Swanwick teen George Pidcock plots future career in MotoGP

At the age of 15, many people don’t have any idea what their next step is going to be in life but that’s not the case for George.

The Swanwick teen already has his sights set on competing on the grandest stage in motorcycling.

And he couldn’t have asked for a better maiden season on the track.

2015 saw George finish with incredible results.

In the Darley Moor formula 125 championship he scooped second place overall whilst in the East Midlands Racing Association Championship he bagged a bronze.

Those performances, coming in his first season, earned him recognition by receiving the prestigious Edwina Overend memorial trophy.

Proud mum Helen reflects on George’s achievements, saying: “He’s done brilliantly.

“He got the award for his racing achievements but he knew nothing about it so it came as a nice shock.

“He was presented the award by Edwina’s husband Ron.”

George, a year 9 pupil at Swanwick Hall School, is currently gearing up towards his second season which begins in March.

“He’ll be competing in the same championships again and on the same bike,” said Helen.

“But George has said he’s going for gold this year.

“He wants both titles.”

Despite his success on the track, Helen insists that education must come before acceleration as George gears towards his GCSE’s in the next couple of years.

She said: “At the moment he has to perform at school before he gets on his bike and he knows that.

“At the minute his biking all happens at the weekend.

“That leaves him to concentrate on school life during the week.

“But George loves anything hands-on.

“He often does a bit of welding out in the shed with his dad, and helps out repairing bikes.

“His overall aim is to get into MotoGP and be a professional rider.

“Hopefully over the next few years he can move up the levels.”

One of the possible avenues to increase George’s profile may be to enter Thundersport series, which televises races - something that Helen believes is an option.

She said: “The next step up is Thundersport which gives TV exposure to riders.

“It takes place on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays.

“They race all over the country so that’s a possible option for the future for George.”

George started out competing in MotoCross at the age of six before progressing onto road racing.

He saved up his own money to be able to afford his first race bike and maintains the bike himself with the help of dad.

Despite her son’s excellent start to his fledgling career, her only concern is that the sheer cost of supporting George can be overwhelming - especially with a lack of sponsorship.

She added: “It costs so much.

“We’ve recently paid £1,000 to rebuild an engine.

“We’ve got no sponsorship whatsoever so it can be hard.”
