“You can come in, have a cup of tea, have a chat and make friends.

“When you’re older and living on your own, it’s nice to come down and meet new people.”

Edwin Tattersall said: “I can remember starting to come here and everyone had to have a library card to take the books out but that was in the days when people read books.”

Janice Thorlby, who used worked at the library, said: “I started on January 6, 1975, and it was the ideal job for me. I’d been reading since I was about three-years-old and I’m still reading at 83. So, for 80 years, I’ve loved books.”

“The smell, the feel and the people.”

Toni Jackson started working at the library in 1994.

“The internet’s been a big change for libraries because everything’s available online now so libraries have evolved to do other things.

“They’ve had to, to keep open.

"Warsop’s a great community library. It’s a centre for people coming in and having a chat. It’s all about meeting people.”

Coun Christopher Adegoke, chairman of Nottinghamshire County Council, wrote on his Facebook page: “I had the pleasure of attending the 70th anniversary celebration of Warsop Library.

“It was fantastic to join Inspire Nottinghamshire Libraries chief executive Peter Gaw, his colleagues, staff and library users for what proved to be a wonderful occasion.

“Warsop Library is a charming little library that has served generations of people in the community over the past 70 years.

“What particularly touched me was hearing the story of a 78-year-old retired firefighter who shared how his mother first introduced him to the library, and how he has continued borrowing books and reading there ever since.

“What a wonderful example of the lasting impact libraries has on our lives.

“It was a real privilege to meet such wonderful people in the Warsop community and to celebrate this important milestone with them.

“Libraries are much more than buildings filled with books; they are places of learning, connection, memories and lifelong discovery.”
