Who has League One's fastest ever red card after Mansfield Town defender sent off after just two mins?

Looking back at the quickest red card given in League One following Owen Dodgson’s sending off for Mansfield Town.

Summer signing Dodgson wasn’t on the pitch for long at all against Huddersfield Town before he was dismissed for a reckless challenge on Derensili Sanches Fernandes.

The Stockport County loanee came on for Stephen McLaughlin after half-time on Saturday and was given his marching orders less than two minutes later.

Stags did well to batten down the hatches against the promotion-chasing Terriers but Dodgson’s dismissal certainly added an extra element of pressure they could have done without.

The left wing-back will now face a suspension as Stags look ahead to their next challenge in this tough season.

Lasting less than 120 seconds in a game of football is certainly some feat but it’s not the fastest a player has seen red. In fact, it’s not even close to the current League One record.

What is the fastest League One sending off?

John Marquis is the man who holds the record for the fastest sending off from the start of a game in League One history.

The former Shrewsbury Town striker was shown a red card only last March while playing against Peterborough United during the 2024/25 League One season.

Just 13 seconds into the game, Marquis was sent off for an elbow on Posh defender Sam Hughes. Shrewsbury went on to be relegated at the end of the season.

The rapid red equalled the record previously set by Sheffield Wednesday goalkeeper Kevin Pressman, who was sent for the earliest bath in English football history back in 2000 when he handled the ball outside the box against Wolves.

Pressman's red came just 13 seconds into Wednesday’s 2000/01 season in England’s second tier, following their relegation from the then Premiership.

As for the quickest red that has come later in a match, Keith Gillespie against Reading was an infamous moment. The astounding moment came during 2007 in the Premier League, when Gillespie was sent down the tunnel without a single second played.

The Sheffield United winger came off the bench during a throw-in against and while his side were preparing for play to restart, he was sent off for an elbow. As the ball had not come back into play, Gillespie was sent off without technically playing a single second of football.

Prior to that, Walter Boyd achieved similar in 1999 for Swansea. He was sent off before play had resumed against Darlington in the English third division – also following an elbowing situation.
