Stags have brought in the experienced defender, who has played in the Football League with Oxford and Sheffield United, from Hereford on a deal which runs until May.

And Clough believes he will also be a great learning foil for Ryan Sweeney and Ferrand Rawson.

“He has been training with us for the last month or two and has done well,” said Clough.

“He has good experience, he is wholehearted and likes heading and tackling - he has the qualities needed in League Two.

“Jake is already helping the other defenders in training. He is paired with either Rawson or Sweeney in the 9 v 9 games, they can learn a lot from him.

“He's not coming just to sit on the bench.

“I think it’s good that we have experience in the squad, with players like Jake, James Perch and Stephen Quinn, who have all played at a higher level and can pass that experience on.”
