Mansfield Town confirm George Abbott return in Deadline Day loan deal from Tottenham Hotspur

Mansfield Town have confirmed the return of George Abbott on a second loan spell from Tottenham Hotspur.

Many fans had been hoping they would see more of the exciting midfielder after his first loan spell earlier this year left many quite fond of him. Now, they will get their wish as the club have announced he will be linking up with Stags once again.

Abbott has signed for Mansfield Town for a second loan stint, with this deal running until the end of the season.

There had been rumours throughout the summer suggesting the 21-year-old was headed back to the One Call Stadium. He initially joined Mansfield during the January window in a short stint until the end of the 2025/26 campaign. He followed fellow Tottenham Academy graduate Oliver Irow, who will be playing against him this season after joining Plymouth Argyle on loan.

Abbott hit the ground running in amber and blue, impressing with a goal on his debut against Peterborough United. After that, he became a regular in Nigel Clough’s first team plans, and started seven games in all competitions, including the FA Cup fifth round clash against Arsenal.

Unfortunately for Abbott, his run of regular appearances was cut short as a ‘serious quad injury’ forced him to the sidelines and he did not feature for Stags again after the 0-0 draw against Burton in April.

A report from football.london prior to Mansfield’s announcement reported Abbott’s pending return to the One Call, ‘with the hope of him staying fit and getting valuable gametime'.

With his previous injury in mind, Clough has confirmed he will not be available right away for Stags as he continues to build up his fitness.

“We’re extremely pleased that George has decided to come back for a second spell with us,” the manager said. “We were hugely impressed with him last season and hope he’ll complement our midfield for the remainder of the season.

“He won’t be fully fit when he arrives and we’ll have to give him a few weeks until he’s available, but the deal reflects that.”
