Mansfield Town century up for a very proud Baily Cargill

Mansfield Town defender Baily Cargill marked his 100th game in a Stags shirt with a superb 1-1 draw away at Plymouth Argyle and then expressed huge pride at his milestone achievement.

He also paid tribute to keeper Liam Roberts and the Mansfield Town fans as the best keeper and supporters he has ever had in his career.

After marking his century of games, Cargill smiled: “That gave me so much pride and it's the first time I have done that with a football club.

“To be able to play 100 games for a single club is something that will stay with me forever.

“I am really proud of it and I am glad to have done it with Mansfield Town.”

With a wet and windy night in storm-hit Devon seeing problems with train and road links, somehow over 500 away fans reached Plymouth to cheer their side on and Cargill said: “Honestly the fans were incredible – it's some effort.

“Obviously we did the journey on Monday.

“But for those guys to come down here, probably taking a day off work and spending their hard-earned money to come and watch us and support us the way they did is phenomenal.

“The away support at Mansfield Town is the best I have had in my professional career and credit to every single one of them that came down tonight and cheered us on.”

He also had huge praise for man of the match keeper Roberts, who kept Plymouth at bay with some crucial saves.

“Robbo is comfortably the best goalkeeper I have played with,” he said.

“He is so, so good and, without him, we would probably have come away with nothing tonight.

“It is just so nice to have him behind me, knowing if they do get a chance then nine times out of 10 he is going to save it.

“He was absolutely terrific tonight and the amount of games he has done that in is phenomenal.”

Trailing after 20 minutes after an error by skipper Ryan Sweeney and under intense pressure, Sweeny netted an equaliser on 42 minutes against the run of play.

Stags were much better after the break as two in-form sides battled out a point apiece.

“That was a brilliant night's work,” said Cargill

“To come here and pick up a point and stay unbeaten is a great result for us. We would have taken that before the game.

“I don't think we started the game great, but we built into it and it just shows the resilience of the boys at the minute and the character we have got.

“To go seven unbeaten is pretty good stuff.

“Plymouth were a completely different prospect to play against tonight than when we faced them earlier in the season. Their two boys up top were powerful.

“But coming into it we knew they were on a good run of form as well, so we knew it would not be an easy game.

“The gaffer said in our meeting that they would be at it – and they were. But we probably weren't for the first 20 minutes. It took us a while to grow into the game. But we battled hard.”

He continued: “We equalised at a crucial time of the game. It takes the energy out of the crowd and takes the energy out of the opposition going into half-time.

“They were probably going to be happy going in 1-0 at half-time.

“It was a great ball in from Regan (Hendry) and Sweens has just managed to get a toe on it, so I was buzzing for him.

“We said at half-time we have so much more than that. It was probably our worst 45 minutes for a long time. But we were still in the game at 1-1. So let's make sure we don't concede again and we can get out of here with a point.

“We changed shape and with Deji (Oshilaja) going into midfield, he helped us break up the play and won his headers.

“We just looked a bit more aggressive and on the front foot second half and we restricted them to long range shots. If anything we probably looked like the team that was going to score on the break.

“We had a couple of chances late on and on another night we could have nicked it.

“I think that is the difference in the team now. With the signings we've made, you look at the bench and the quality that can come on now.”
