And a delighted Pearce says Stags must now use the victory as a platform when they face fellow promotion candidates Wycombe on Tuesday night.

“The gaffer spoke before the game and said we need to start winning games and today was the start of it,he said. “Hopefully we can go on a run and get in the top three.

“The first half was a tight game, once we got the second goal we started to calm down and play a bit of football.

“We felt we did not play enough football in the first half, we just tried to get it down more in the second half.

“Once we did that things opened up for us. From there we are disappointed not to keep a clean sheet.”

And Pearce, whose second goal deflected in off Grimsby defender Karleigh Osbourne, said he was just aiming to keep his place in the team.

He added: “I just want to keep my place and do everything right. There is a lot of competition for places and the standard has gone up this aeason.

“When I got my chance I tried to perform as best I can and I want to keep performing.
