“I can’t help thinking we should all be celebrating victory but we got a kick in the teeth at the end which has made the mood after not great,” Cahill, 30, told BBC Radio 5 Live.
“Our performance was fantastic, for sure that’s one of the best performances I’ve been involved in in an England squad. There are a lot of positives to take from it, it should have been a win - it’s hard to take.
“That could have been 3-0 or 4-0 on a different day. I thought the lads were terrific, each and every individual. Our performance was high.
“We wanted to get off to a winning start but if we bring that level of confidence and performance in the next two games, we’ll be fine.”
