Clinton Morrison hails Nigel Clough's 'outstanding' tenure as new Mansfield Town managerial record set

Nigel Clough now holds the record for the most EFL matches overseen as manager of Mansfield Town.

After marking his 275th league game, the Stags boss wrote his name in the history books by overtaking club legend Ian Greaves’ previous record.

Clough is now close to becoming Mansfield Town’s longest-serving manager of all time and Sky Sports pundit Clinton Morrison has lauded the gaffer’s achievements in amber and blue.

Next month will see Mansfield Town celebrate six years of the Nigel Clough era. He first put pen to paper with Stags on 6 November 2020, when they were struggling in the bottom ranks of League Two. Since then, Clough has guided Mansfield Town back to League One and they have continued to improve season after season under his tenure.

Former Crystal Palace and Birmingham City forward Morrison praised Clough’s achievements with Mansfield Town, following his record-breaking 275th league match in charge.

“Cloughy's been brilliant. He's got so much experience. I saw him at the EFL Awards two years ago when he got Manager of the Year. I was sat at his table, and he spoke to me literally the whole night. I've got a lot of time for him,” Morrison told the Chad, via BetSelect.co.uk.

“He's a manager who doesn't say much, but he's got that look that says, ‘you'd better start delivering’. On the touchline, he doesn't look like a ranter or a raver, but if things are not going well, he'll let you know. He looks like a controlled individual, and I think people like to play for him.”

Like many others, Morrison pinpointed the larger significance of Clough’s long-standing term as Mansfield Town manager. As he approaches the anniversary of his sixth year, Clough boasts the longest standing current tenure in all of League One, League Two and the Championship.

In fact, his impressive run with Stags is second only to Mikel Arteta’s reign at Arsenal throughout the entire top four divisions of the English football pyramid.

“His longevity at Mansfield has been outstanding,” Morrison, who scored more than 100 goals for Crystal Palace said. “The owners have a good manager there, and I respect them because they've stayed with him and backed him.

“That's the biggest thing. In this day and age, managing a club for that long is a real achievement, and may it continue. Five years is like a life sentence. That doesn't happen nowadays. You're lucky if you get two years.”

Clough’s era at Mansfield Town is certainly on a pedestal right in the middle of the more common ‘fire and hire’ climate in football management. His players have also praised the manager’s longevity at the One Call Stadium as they look to challenge for a top six push in League One, using last season’s tenth-place finish as a springboard to dizzying new heights.

“It’s really uncommon in football these days, it’s a merry-go-round of managers at every club so to have the longevity at one club speaks volumes about what the manager is capable of,” summer signing Michael Smith said recently. “This season especially, with the squad he’s put together and the football we are playing. It’s really enjoyable to be here.”
