Nigel Clough makes Mansfield Town history with 275th league game in charge

Nigel Clough has made history at Mansfield Town by setting a new record for the most league games managed.

Stags’ League One meeting with AFC Wimbledon saw Clough overtake the record previously set by club legend Ian Greaves.

The clash at Plough Lane marked Clough’s 275th league match in charge of Mansfield Town since his arrival in 2020.

The boss says this significant milestone is a ‘credit to the club for sticking with the same manager for six years’.

Clough’s impressive stretch at the One Call Stadium is the longest current serving tenure in League One. During his influential era, Stags have gone from strength to strength and the performances on the pitch have continued to improve year after year.

Clough guided Mansfield to League One promotion in 2024, sending them back to the third tier of English football for the first time since 2002.

Last season marked their best league finish in almost 40 years and their new mission is to climb as high as possible up the table and flirt with the idea of promotion play-off football.

This milestone is a massive marker and achievement for both Clough and Mansfield Town.

“I hope it’s more for the club, with the stability they’ve had over the past five or six years,” the manager said. “It’s a big thing for them to go from the bottom of League Two to a top half finish in League One last season.”

Reflecting on his time with Stags, Clough said: “It’s not been particularly easy but I think the nicest thing has been the connection between the supporters and the club returning. It’s lovely to see them come back and wear their shirts with pride, home and away.

“From what they tell us, they enjoy watching us play. They know the challenges Mansfield Town are up against in League One but most of them say they’re really enjoying watching us compete at this level.”
