Alfreton Town gear up for ‘biggest game in years’ ahead of Welling clash

Alfreton Town host Welling United in a Vanarama Conference game which is of absolutely huge importance, certainly the biggest fixture since Nicky Law’s side reached the top level of the non-league pyramid four seasons ago.

The Reds currently sit in the bottom four only due to goal difference as both these teams desperately search for a win to take a massive step towards safety.

Alfreton are without a win in seven, their last coming away at Dartford on 14th March.

In their last outing, Nicky Law’s men fell victims to fourth-placed Eastleigh.

Eastleigh went ahead on 21 minutes through Partigton but Hawley equalised just four minutes later. Ben Strevens then reinstated the home side’s lead from the spot as Lenighan fouled Jai Reason in the area. Stanley made sure of the victory for Eastleigh when he scored just two minutes from full time.

Welling picked up a win against mid-table Wrexham and claimed only their second back-to-back win of the season as they ran out 2-1 winners. Berry and Vose put the home side 2-0 up inside 20 minutes but a late goal in the 82nd minute for Wrexham left the Welling faithful in with a nervous last eight minutes but they managed to hang on for a vital three points.

Alfreton have lost their last three games and a result is much needed.

Fans from around Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire are being called upon to support the Reds in their most important game of the season as Derby and Chesterfield both play away.

A ‘pay what you want’ scheme is in place for the game as Alfreton try to attract a large crowd for the game.

With the exception of Bradley Wood who sits the game out through a one-match suspension following a sending off at Eastleigh last weekend, Reds manager Nicky Law has a full-strength squad to choose from.
