It says snow, with a risk of widespread ice, is likely to push slowly northeast from late on Monday.
The Met Office says 1-4cm of snow is quite likely away from the coast, with 5-10cm possible above about 150 metres.
Its latest forecast shows snow is most likely to fall in Nottinghamshire on Tuesday morning and early afternoon.
People have been warned to expect travel delays, with the possibility of road closures and vehicles and passengers becoming stranded, while rural communities could be cut off.
Power cuts may occur, mobile phone coverage could be affected and there is a risk of injuries from slips and falls on icy surfaces, the Met Office adds.
