Mrs Hallam said: "It was very shocking, there are lots of dog walkers, runners and anglers in this area.

"When I got up around 7am there were 7 police cars and the path behind our street was cordoned off.

"I wondered if anything had happened in Hermitage Pond, as there were a few officers on the path with equipment and lights."

"I still feel safe, it's quiet around here."

Christine Kruzynska said: "I walk my dog regularly around here on my own, this won't put me off. You hear of things like this happening and it's very sad. I often see young women in the early hours running alone."

Another resident, who wished to remain anonymous said: "I come out here quite late at night birdwatching. It's awful to hear of something like this so close to home. I don't feel as safe now."

A couple, who did not want to be named said: "We saw five police cars and two vans at around 6am, but no one would tell us anything so we didn't know what had happened.

"We asked the police if we were safe and they said yes.

"We've lived here for over 40 years and we don't really hear of things like this."
