Race for Life

Verna Lydon is set to take part along with thousands more in the Race for Life taking place at the Victoria Embankment in Nottingham.

But unlike the majority of entries, Verna will be competing in a self-propelling wheelchair.

“I lost a close friend to cancer so this has been my motivation to take part in this year’s event,” said 52 year-old Verna of John Wright Close. “I was planning to take part with another friend but her husband died recently however I decided to carry on and tackle it on my own.”

Verna has been left disabled after struggling for many years with sciatica which resulted in her needing several surgeries.

“It has been very painful over many years and has left me unable to work but after losing my friend it puts things in perspective,” said Verna. “I’m hoping to encourage other people with disabilities out there that there is light at the end of the tunnel and despite being in pain I am determined to do it.”

Verna, who is a member of Hucknall Leisure Centre, has been training for this weekend’s event by using specific equipment at the gym to build up the strength in her upper arms.

“I’ve only recently been given the self-propelling wheelchair so it is very new to me but my son has been helping me and the team at the gym have also given me support and advice on what to do to enable me to take part in the race.

“I’m looking forward to the day and hope I will achieve my target of completing the 5km challenge.”
