Edwinstowe's County Councillor John Peck is set to present a petition to Nottinghamshire County Council, opposing proposal to frack in or around Sherwood Forest.

The petition is on behalf of Edwinstowe Parish Council, which believes a majority of Edwinstowe residents would support its plan to oppose fracking proposals in the area.

The petition states that “the residents of Edwinstowe oppose the extraction of oil and gas” within the boundary of Edwinstowe Parish and the Sherwood Forest area.

Councillor Peck said: “I am concerned that our county council and member of parliament appear to be silent on the issue and are not speaking up for our residents.

“I am also horrified that the government are now considering the possibility of allowing fracking to be carried out under the ‘permitted development’ rules, which means planning permission would not be required.

“Local residents and their elected representatives would have no say in the matter.”

The petition will be handed into Nottinghamshire County Council, where a response will be required.

Fracking is becoming a contentious issue around north Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire, with other anti-fracking groups set up in Ashfield and Shirebrook.
