Chad readers have suggested some popular ‘characters’ who they feel would be deserving of a statue in Mansfield Market Place.
Here are 13 people suggested for a statue – including two duos.
9. Peter Morris
Peter Morris made over 300 appearances for Mansfield Town during an eight season spell. He was player-manager when Mansfield were promoted to the second division in 1976-77. Given his debut at the age of 17 by boss Raich Carter, New Houghton-born Stags fan Morris quickly blossomed into one of the club’s greatest post-war discoveries and one of the youngest captains Mansfield had ever had. But, after eight fantastic years, including promotion to Division Three in 1963 and third place in Division Three in 1965, Mansfield shocked their fans by selling him to first division Ipswich for a cut-price of £15,000. Stags ended up paying £10,000 to bring Morris back in as player-manager in July 1976. Morris took the club to division two (the current championship) for the only time in their history in 1977. His history with the club makes him the perfect fit for a statue, according to some supporters. Photo: Mansfield Chad
10. Steve Ward
Steve Ward is a WLO cruiserweight champion of the world. Born in Nottingham and now living in Mansfield, Ward was given a civic reception by the mayor of Nottingham at Nottingham Council House in 2012 to recognise his achievements. He is most notable for having held the accolade of being the oldest professional boxer in the world. He was first confirmed as such in 2011 at age 54. He lost the distinction of world's oldest professional in 2015, when an older fighter, American Mike Palmer, competed in a professional bout, but regained it later that year when he fought professionally at 59. He was then described as the oldest active boxer, after a fight against younger boxer Jody Meikle at Chesterfield, attended by a Guinness World Records adjudicator. Ward retired in 2017 but continues to support sports in the area. He was suggested as a good figure to grace Mansfield Market Place as a statue. What do you think? Photo: Mansfield Chad
11. Jono Edwards and Miss Margo
Here is Jono Edwards with Miss Margo at the Christmas light switch-on in 2022. Kerry Knight suggested the pair would make a great statue in Mansfield Market Place. Bar and restaurant boss Jono Edwards is best known for being one of the town's biggest employers, running popular pubs across the area, and hosting various community events throughout the year. Miss Margo works at The Red Bar & Grill and The Cheeky Monkey Bar in Mansfield. The duo are best known for their lively entertainment and epic events. Photo: Brian Eyre
