In 2024, we reported on several stories from across the community, including devastating fires, events and exhibitions, fundraising efforts and campaigns.
We also covered significant political changes in the region, such as the historic election of an East Midlands Mayor in May and the appointment of a new MP for Mansfield in July.
Additionally, we followed Mansfield Town FC after their promotion to League One.
Here is your 2024 in review…

25. Victory for the mineworkers pension scheme
The payment is part of the government's efforts to address a historic injustice, with £1.5 billion transferred to the pension scheme in October. Former mineworkers received these funds directly in November, ensuring that those who contributed to the country's prosperity for decades receive the fair compensation they deserve for their labour. Campaigners and the National Union of Mineworkers advocated for this pension increase, with the injustice outlined in the Labour Party's 2024 manifesto. The uplift represents an average 32 per cent rise to the annual pensions of nearly 112,000 former mineworkers and their dependents across the UK – an average increase of £29 per week for each member. 27. Paddock Close Christmas lights
Mansfield's Paddock Close Christmas event is back and “bigger than ever”. For more than 15 years, Paddock Close has transformed into a winter wonderland for the festive season in aid of charitable causes. This year, the event is raising funds for The Lashes Foundation, which honours the memory of Evie Wilson, who died at the age of 13 in 2021, and Jack of All Hearts, a charity dedicated to providing support to those affected by brain cancer.
