Annual Beauvale Show proves to be another hot hit
This year’s Beauvale Horticultural Show in Newthorpe was another warm summer success.
Held at Greasley Sports & Community Centre, the scorching summer had affected the vegetables and certain flowers and plants but that didn’t deter entries from coming in.

Displays of plants and colourful flowers filled the hall, along with the usual monster vegetables and an array of baked goods, preserves and home-made liqueurs, which proved to be very popular with the judges.
The floral art displays, with the theme of ‘happy days’ once again show the artistic flare competitors have with flower and foliage arranging.

The craft section proved to be very popular with far more entries than in previous years – the photographic section had 18 entries on the theme ‘whatever the weather’.
Karen Sutton, event organiser, said: “We always have something to say about the weather, but this year proved that, in spite of the hot weather, we had enough produce to exhibit and to award prizes and trophies.”
This year’s Banksian winner was Michael Chisholm, who has exhibited at the show for many years.
He also won the Gordon Jarrett Shield for the most points in the vegetable section), the Tom Millington Trophy, for the most first prizes in the vegetable section and the and the NVS Medal and Certificate for the ‘most meritorious exhibit in the vegetable section’.

Peter Harvey won the Beauvale Horticultural Show Challenge Trophy for most points across the whole show.
Sandra Wheatley won the Sherwood Group Salver for the fruit section Best in Show.
Caroline Winfield won the British Sugarcraft Guild Trophy for the most points in the culinary section, while Joyce Bonsall was awarded the Bettina Edmonds Trophy for cullinary Best in Show.
The Beauvale Bowl for Best in Show in floral art was given to Stella Taylor and Eileen Harvey received a monetary award for second place.
Mac Robert Walker won the DA Whistler Trophy for Best in Show in the plant and flower section for display of dahlias, which also won the National Dahlia Society silver and bronze medals.
Karen added: “Another successful show, with thanks to all the volunteers whose hard work made it possible.
"We were in danger of closing the show but an appeal in March brought in quite a number of supporters for which we are extremely grateful.”
