5. Visit Holocaust Museum
This entails a trip to Laxton in Newark, but the National Holocaust Centre and Museum is well worth it. Not only does it commemorate the systematic murder of six million Jews by Nazi Germany in the early 1940s, it is also a place of learning for people of all faiths. 6. Cycling through the woods
The Ancient Sherwood Cycle Route offers a day out cycling with family or friends through woodland. It starts at the Sherwood Forest Art and Craft Centre in Edwinstowe and takes you through Sherwood Forest and on to Clumber Park. If you choose to do the whole circular route, it spans 20 miles, but the terrain is mainly flat and there are lots of stop-offs for refreshments along the way. Photo: Submitted
7. Embrace nature and wildlife
Among the many nature reserves in Mansfield is this one at Quarry Lane, within a stone's throw of Stags' stadium. The site has many historical features, particularly Drury's dam viaduct, built in the 1870s, and the remains of a cotton mill building that was once the third largest in Europe. The River Maun meanders through, entering Field Mill Pond, which attracts a wide variety of birds and a thriving population of water voles. 8. All the fun of the circus
Nottingham's Goose Fair site, the Forest Recreation Ground, springs to life again this weekend when Circus Zyair pays a visit. Immerse yourself in the electric atmosphere of the big top and enjoy an action-packed, two-hour family show, starring high-energy acts from all over the world.
