Political Opinion - Natalie Fleet MP: Reform donations "raise important questions about the role of big money in our politics."

There has been a lot of discussion over the past fortnight about the £72 million donated to Reform UK by two cryptocurrency billionaires.

Whatever your political views, that is an extraordinary amount of money for a political party to receive in such a short space of time. The donations are within the current rules, but I think they raise important questions about the role of big money in our politics.

For me, politics should always be about people. It should be about listening to our communities, standing up for local people and working hard to make a difference. I believe we should look carefully at whether the current rules around political donations are right and whether stronger safeguards are needed. People should have confidence that our political system works for them, not for a few wealthy people.

Closer to home, my team and I have been busy helping constituents a range of issues.

We recently helped one local resident have their Carer’s Allowance reinstated, with more than £2,000 owed to them by the Department for Work and Pensions returned. We have also been supporting a number of former civil servants and NHS workers across Bolsover who are trying to recover pension payments they are owed.

These cases can be incredibly stressful, especially when people are already facing financial pressures. Getting a decision overturned or helping someone receive money they are entitled to can make a real difference to their lives. I’m incredibly proud of the work my team does every day to support constituents and make sure they get the answers they deserve.

If you are a constituent and are struggling with an issue, please don’t hesitate to contact my office. We are here to help.

Last week, MPs also voted against the Terminally Ill Adults (End of Life) Bill by 286 votes to 270.

I know assisted dying is an issue that people feel very strongly about, and I respect those who have concerns about changing the law. I voted for the Bill because I believe terminally ill people deserve dignity, compassion and a choice about the end of their lives, alongside the strongest possible safeguards.

I was particularly moved by speaking to Glapwell resident Sammy McHugh, who told me about the painful final days of his mum’s life. He wants changing the law to be her legacy, so other families do not have to go through the same experience.

Sammy’s story has stayed with me. Whatever our views on this deeply personal issue, we must continue to listen to people and families who are living through these incredibly difficult circumstances and treat their experiences with compassion and respect.
