Political Opinion: Labour MP Steve Yemm leads cross-party call for urgent meeting with County Council over fixing Nottinghamshire’s ‘broken roads'

The Labour MP for Mansfield has led a cross-party call for an urgent meeting with Nottinghamshire County Council over the state of the county’s roads.
Steve Yemm brought together eight Nottinghamshire MPs from Labour, the Conservatives and Reform to put their names to a letter, which has now been sent to the Chief Executive of the County Council, Adrian Smith.
The letter, signed by six Labour MPs as well as Reform UK MP for Ashfield Lee Anderson and Conservative MP for Newark Robert Jenrick, criticises the council’s poor handling of the road repair budget, especially as the budget has gone up by over £8 million under this Labour Government - an increase in funding of 43%.
The Labour MP for Mansfield is now demanding a plan from Nottinghamshire County Council setting out high-priority roads for repair, what action will be taken now, and how additional funding will deliver improvement that will ensure roads are long lasting.
Steve Yemm said: “Enough is enough. People in Mansfield are fed up with the lack of action by Reform-controlled Nottinghamshire County Council. They can’t use a lack of funding as an excuse because this Labour Government have increased Notts County Council’s pothole budget by £8 million – up by 43% from the previous Tory government.
“Residents in Mansfield feel very strongly about the state of our roads, as I’m sure other Nottinghamshire MPs are hearing from their own constituents as well. You shouldn’t have to risk damage to your car every time you need to go to the supermarket. I will be meeting with the Chief Executive of NCC alongside all willing MPs in Nottinghamshire to finally fix our broken roads.
“The fact that every other Notts county MP has agreed to put their name to the letter shows this is an issue that affects us all – and that there’s a desperate need for something to be done.”
