Nottinghamshire football fans remember Hillsborough victims on 26th anniversary of disaster

Football fans from across Nottinghamshire have been paying tribute to the 96 Liverpool supporters who died in the Hillsborough disaster 26 years ago today.

They were killed in a crush on the Leppings Lane terrace during the FA Cup semi-final between Liverpool and Nottingham Forest on 15th April 1989.

Many Forest fans have taken to social media to pay tribute to the victims - the youngest being just 10 years old and the oldest, 67.

Writing on Twitter this morning, Chris Daley said: “RIP to all those who went to a football match and lost their lives 26 years ago today #nffc #LFC #JFT96.”

Chad assistant editor Ashley Booker was with his father and brother on that dreadful day nearly three decades ago.

He wrote: “Thoughts with everyone who was at Hillsborough 26 years ago today and the families and friends of those who didn’t return home. #nffc #lfc.”

And Mansfield-based Nottingham Forest supporter Mason simply posted: “#YNWA96 #JFT96 #nffc.”

Meanwhile, Nottingham Forest tweeted on its official feed: “26 years ago, at #NFFC’s FA Cup semi-final against @LFC, 96 supporters tragically lost their lives. Our thoughts are with their families.”

An inquest into the deaths of the 96 people is currently taking place in Warrington after an independent panel found that up to 41 of the fatalities could have been avoided if they had received better medical care.

The report also revealed ‘multiple failures’ by other emergency services and public bodies that contributed to the death toll.

In December 2012, a new inquest was granted in the High Court.
