Fire service strike tonight

Firefighters in Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire are set to go on strike this evening as part of an ongoing dispute with the Government over pensions.

Members of the Fire Brigades’ Union have scheduled industrial action for Christmas Eve, New Year’s Eve and Friday 3rd January 2014.

They will walk out for five hours from 7pm tonight, for six hours from 6.30pm on 31st December and for two hours from 6.30am on 3rd January.

A spokesman for Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service said: “All 999 calls will be responded to, but our resources will be limited and response times may be slower than usual.”

Area manager Gavin Tomlinson, the spokesman for Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service, said that they were asking members of the public to take extra steps to reduce the risk of a fire breaking out in their home and to take extra care when driving on the roads during this time.

“Fire can start for a variety of reasons, from cooking being left unattended, to electrical faults or candles being placed too close to furnishings and Christmas decorations,” he said.

“It is therefore essential that everyone ensures that they have a working smoke alarm fitted on every level of their home, to provide vital early warning of a fire and give occupants crucial time to escape.

“I would ask anyone who is attending or organising a Christmas or New Year’s Eve party to stay vigilant and help ensure that everyone stays out of harm’s way and parties safely this festive season. If your party involves fireworks, please ensure they are dealt with responsibly.”
