The pair then took a taxi to the uncle’s address where the fight had broken out when they got out of the vehicle at Blyth Court, Mansfield, in December 2019. the court heard.

Prosecuting, Donna Fawcett told the court: “During the taxi ride home, the complainant had told the defendant to shut up in an aggressive manner. Outside the taxi, the complainant came towards the defendant, taking his jacket off, saying ‘give me the f****** weed’, and punched him.

“The defendant told police that he had punched his uncle three times, but not very hard. He found the wallet on the floor and went and bought four cans of lager and went to a friends house where he smoked some of the cannabis.”

She told the court that McHugh had taken £40 in cash from the wallet but left the item at the property, and the occupier later used a bank card and removed £1,200 from the victim’s account.

Speaking in his own defence, McHugh told the court: “I actually called the police about it myself the following day when three men turned up at my house threatening my life over what had happened with my uncle.

“When I got back from the police station, the front windows had been put through at my house and members of the public had posted about what had happened all over Facebook.

“My uncle’s no angel, he’s been in prison for half of his life.”
