Ty Chapman fled from officers in August last year after they spotted him driving his silver Honda Civic on false plates, reaching speeds of 113mph before causing an eight-car pile-up at the junction of the A611 Derby Road and the B6139 Coxmoor Road, near Kirkby.

Chapman, 26, was jailed for 32 months at Nottingham Court on Monday, March 8, after admitting two counts of causing serious injury by dangerous driving, driving with false plates, driving without a licence and driving with no insurance.

The video shows Chapman's vehicle overtaking rows of cars on the wrong side of the road and running red lights prior to the collision, which happened when he again tried to run a red light on the wrong side of the road and smashed into oncoming traffic.

Chapman, of of Rowen Close, Forest Town, broke his own back in the collision and also had to be cut from his vehicle and his passenger, identified in court as Levi Robinson, was also left with spinal injuries and a perforated bowel.

Others involved reported more minor injuries but many said the crash had left them with severe emotional problems, with one woman saying she was now terrified of driving, the court heard.

Chapman’s silver Honda Civic smashed head on into a Kia vehicle, flipped around smashing into another car, then travelled through the air, crushing the roof of an Audi TT and trapping the female passenger inside, the court heard.

The woman received severe back and chest injuries and said in a statement to the court that “her life would never be the same again”, said Esther Harrison, prosecuting.

Commenting on the case, Case Investigator Louise Melbourne, of Nottinghamshire Police’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit, said: “This was an absolutely terrifying experience for Chapman’s innocent victims. I can only imagine the fear they felt as they looked up and saw him flying towards them. Several of them really are lucky to be alive.

“Chapman’s driving on that day was some of the most dangerous I have ever seen – demonstrating a chilling disregard not only for other road users, but also for his passenger.

“Had he simply pulled over for police and accepted his punishment none of this would have happened; he wouldn’t now be starting a jail sentence and his victims would not have to live with the long-term physical and mental impact of he did on that evening.

“I would also like to thank the members of the public who provided first aid and assistance to the injured people on the day of the collision and also to those that assisted with the investigation”.

Sentencing Chapman yesterday, Judge Warburton told him: “There didn’t appear to be any attempt to break or avoid the collision, and it must have been very traumatic for all those caught up in it as a result of your appalling driving.”
