Council backs sale of site for 80-bed hotel

Plans for an 80-bed hotel in Mansfield town centre have moved a step closer.

The Stockwell Gate North site has been declared surplus to Mansfield District Ccouncil’s requirements and will now be sold to the ARBA Group, a local Mansfield firm, for re-development.

ARBA Group intends to build an 80-bed hotel with roof terrace, restaurant, café, bar and gym.

The proposed scheme also includes a piazza and open space along with other landscaping.

Councillor Roger Sutcliffe, council porfolio holder for finance, has upheld the original recommendation to dispose of the site, following a call-in of that decision.

The ARBA Group will now continue negotiations with the council and national hotel, food and drinks operators to bring the plans to fruition over the next two years.

Kate Allsop, Mansfield mayor, said: “We are very pleased our long-term vision to regenerate the town centre, coupled with the desire to establish a much-needed hotel in Mansfield, have taken a step closer.

“Redeveloping this key gateway site will make the town centre an inviting and enjoyable place to visit and stay and this will in turn help create a thriving and sustainable district.”

Speaking on behalf of the ARBA Group, managing director Richard Burns said: “This is a fantastic site in Mansfield and will act as a gateway development for the town centre.

“It’s the ideal location for a hotel and associated leisure facilities, and will help drive footfall into other town centre shops and businesses.

“Being local, we know Mansfield is a perfect location for exactly this type of development.”
