In the East Midlands, a total of 13,650 new homes were delivered by local authorities between 2010 and 2014, the report states.

Since April 2010, 31,600 households have also purchased properties under the Right to Buy scheme nationally – including 22,600 council tenants and 8,900 housing association residents.

Housing Minister Brandon Lewis said: “Since 2010 we’ve delivered 204,000 new affordable homes.

“And, thanks to our Right to Buy, social housing tenants who once saw home ownership as being out of reach are now getting their chance to take their first steps onto the property ladder.”

However, a quarter of all affordable homes built nationally were in the London area, the report reveals.
