Speaking to the BBC this morning, Ashfield District Council leader Jason Zadrozny said he only found out about the measures yesterday morning .

"We had an emergency meeting with ministers and they wanted it to happen by midnight last night. which we said was bonkers and unworkable . We got two hours yesterday morning . The communication from the Government has been a shambles for us,” he said.“The Government specifically said that Ashfield, Mansfield and the rest of North Nottinghamshire didn't need to be included - stay in tier two don't be in the conversations - so we were preparing our businesses and all our residents for those things. Cases are rising so the Government should have been including us earlier.“Those people deserve to have some certainty and the Government hasn't given us that.”He added: “If the Government doesn't put in some real financial support packages a lot of those businesses will go to the wall.“We are going to get about one and a bit million to give to the businesses . When the first pandemic hit we got £22 million. It's a drop in the ocean."

Health Secretary Matt Hancock said the restrictions are aiming to ‘stop the virus in its tracks’ and that the Government has ‘not taken these decisions lightly’.

He added: “I want to thank local leaders for their continued support, and to extend my gratitude to the people of Nottinghamshire who have shown real resilience, consistently working together to follow the rules and help bring down rates of infection.
