According to MP Ben Bradley delivery of the vaccine will happen “across a variety of NHS services, targeted initially at the clinically vulnerable, elderly, or those who work directly with them in health or care settings.”

Mr Bradley said: “It's really positive news that we're able to begin to roll out the vaccine and look forward to getting our lives back.

“The reason for this is to prioritise reducing deaths, of course, and also hospitalisations, which will then reduce the risk of overwhelming NHS services. That will allow us to expand it to the general population and lift restrictions in the spring.

“It takes two doses and around a month for those receiving the vaccine to become immune, so it's still a few months away from making a real impact, but we're leading the world in getting this sorted."

Jonathan Gribbin, Director of Public Health for Nottinghamshire, said: “I welcome this fantastic news that the Pfizer/BioNTech coronavirus vaccine has been approved for widespread use in the UK. The NHS is leading on the rollout of the vaccine, but we are working with the NHS and other partners on extensive plans so we are ready to deliver the vaccinations as soon as possible.

“In the meantime, it remains absolutely essential that everyone continues to stick to the hands, face, space guidance. Thank you to everyone in Nottinghamshire who has worked so hard to stick to the rules during lockdown and who will continue to do so now we are a tier 3 area. By working together, we can help to keep the virus under control.”

NHS chief executive Sir Simon Stevens said: “This is an important next step in our response to the coronavirus pandemic and hospitals will shortly kick off the first phase of the largest scale vaccination campaign in our country’s history.“The NHS has a proven track record of delivering large scale vaccinations from the winter flu jab to BCG and, once the final hurdles are cleared and the vaccine arrives in England’s hospitals, health service staff will begin offering people this ground-breaking jab in a programme that will expand to cover the whole country in the coming months.”
