Derbyshire school makes visors and PPE for Chesterfield Royal Hospital's Covid-19 battle

The Bolsover School’s technology department has also produced 490 ear savers – which allow elasticated masks to attach at the back of nurses’ heads to save their ears from becoming sore through prolonged use.

A total of 150 pairs of protective eye wear and 400 pairs of latex gloves have also been handed over by the school’s science department to the Royal’s infection control team.

The visors and ear savers were created using materials from the school and produced in just one week – largely thanks to the efforts of technology department teacher Emma Whapplington.

Headteacher Matt Hall said: “As a school we saw an opportunity to play our part in supporting the NHS to help fight against this terrible virus.

“The effort and commitment of our Technology teacher Miss Whapplington, who came up with the idea of making the PPE masks must be commended, alongside the other members of staff at the school who made this happen.

“Supporting our local community during this time is a huge priority and as a school we are happy to do anything we can do to help.”

Miss Whapplington only joined the school in April, but has joined other staff in a collective effort to do their bit during the pandemic.

On delivery of the visors, Chesterfield Royal Hospital bosses told the school they ‘are very grateful and that it would make a real difference to them’.

Rolls of disposable aprons have also been donated to staff at the Royal.

Further donations have been made to Chesterfield’s Ashgate Hospice, Haddon House Care Home, Vale Care Home, Millfield Care Home, Clay Cross Medical Centre, Lifetime Home Care, Emmett Carr Surgery and King’s Mill Hospital at Sutton-in-Ashfield.

Earlier this month, it was revealed that Dronfield’s Henry Fanshawe School had produced up to 300 face shields for NHS staff.

Businesses have also transformed themselves to produce PPE to support the battle against the virus.
