Swim ace Ollie warms up for Rio with new world record

Kirkby swim star Ollie Hynd continued his countdown to the Rio Paralympics in style by breaking his own world Men's S8 400m Freestyle record at the British Swimming National Summer Championships in Sheffield's Ponds Forge at the weekend.

Claiming the gold medal, the Notts Nova Centurion ace swam 4:28.67 in the heats, and lowered the time again in the final with a record-setting 4:23.76, ending with a total of 1006 points to seal the win.

In one of the most memorable moments of the 2015 IPC Swimming World Championships in Glasgow Hynd finally broke his brother’s five year old world record with 4:24.32 in the 400m freestyle and has now bettered that at a perfect moment in his career.

Hynd, who holds the SM8 200m medley Commonwealth, World and Paralympic titles, tweeted: “Really happy to have broken my 400 free world record tonight. Great place to be in going into Rio! Not long to go.

“Feels great for all my hard work to have paid off. Super happy with all my swims this week, feel in great shape going into Rio.

“I can’t wait to get out there and perform when it really matters. I know I’ve got loads more in the tank.”

Silver at Sheffield went to S7 Michael Jones, of Mount Kelly Swimming, with 897 points and bronze medallist was S12 Stephen Clegg (West Lothian) with 891 points.
