Pat Hoban netted a brace and Alfie Potter a perfect chip as a strong Mansfield Town side won 3-2 in their Central League reserve derby away at Chesterfield this afternoon.

Fielding a side in which Lewis Collins was the only one who had not played in the first team, the Stags raced into a 3-0 lead at the Proact Stadium before the Spireites conjured up two late replies in the final eight minutes.

George Taft and Kyle Howkins linked up as at centre halves with Ashley Hemmings and James Baxendale playing unfamiliar full-back roles either side of them.

Dominating possession, Mansfield went into half-time 2-0 up thanks to Hoban.

The opener came on 13 minutes when the Irishman robbed defender George Lynam on the edge of the box, his tackle ricocheting beyond keeper Parkin.

More poor defending on 31 minutes was again punished by Hoban.

Parkin tried to step inside Yoann Arquin but could only square the ball to Hoban, who gleefully guided it into the empty net.

Hoban was replaced by Zayn Hakeem at the break and on 59 minutes the youngster set up Potter for an unstoppable 18-yard chip into the top corner.

Charlie Wakefield took the ball around Jensen to pull one back on 82 minutes and on 90 minutes Luke Rawson beat James Baxendale in the box to finish low under Jensen and make added time nervier than it should have been.

Several Stags players, notably scorers Hoban and Potter, caught the eye as boss Steve Evans ponders his first team selection for the weekend, while Kyke Howkins’ substitution on the hour suggests he is set to replace the injured Krystian Pearce at Morecambe.
