Codnor CC beat Alfreton CC by 50 runs

Codnor had their bowlers to thank as they chalked up their first win of the campaign against newly-promoted Alfreton despite only make 146.

On a wet and miserable day, where only one other game in the league was completed, the away side won the toss and unsurprisingly asked the hosts to take first knock.

A decent opening stand of 31 by openers Colson and Vincent was disrupted when Colson hit a full toss straight down mid-wicket’s throat, and Vincent followed soon after with almost a carbon copy of the first wicket.

Anderson, A.Wood and then Jack Melbourne all got out cheaply too, leaving the score on a perilous 60-5.

Leo and Colledge set about building a decent partnership, before the former was bowled by Bexton.

This brought Jones to the crease, but yet again the home side lost a wicket cheaply as Colledge was bowled by Bexton for a top scoring 36.

James Melbourne followed soon after, and with the score 114-8, it looked like it might end up being a walkover for the away side.

Nothing is set in stone with cricket though, and Jones, with captain Ben Wood playing a supporting role took the attack to the Alfreton bowlers and shared a crucial tailend partnership that took the score from very poor to a below-par, yet defendable 146.

The home side set about trying to defend their total. Leo and Bonsall opened, and whilst the latter struggled slightly finding his range, the former continued his good form from last week and got his first victim almost immediately as he trapped Aspinall LBW.

A few loose balls from either end saw Clarke hit multiple boundaries to briskly make his way to 21, but it was Leo again who stopped him in his tracks, again trapping the opener LBW.

With Bonsall not finding his range, Wood made the change to bring himself on, and it proved dividends as he took two wickets in his first over.

His next bowling change also proved to be timely, as James Melbourne replaced Leo and immediately took two wickets in his first over too.

A brief fightback from the away side, led by Pawelski left the match in the balance.

But Wood made another inspired bowling change, bringing Colledge on for Melbourne, who finished up with 2-13 off his five overs.

Colledge immediately took the wicket of Noonan, whilst Wood trapped Briggs LBW to leave Pawelski running out of partners.

So when Wood took his fourth scalp with the all-important wicket of Pawelski, the end was nigh.

It was only a matter of time before the tail was cleaned up, and Colledge did the honours by bowling Robbins for 5, leaving the away side 96ao. Wood was the pick of the bowlers with figures of 4-29 off his 10 overs.

The first team travel to local rivals and promotion candidates Marehay on Saturday as they look to build on this first win.
