NOSTALGIA: 100 year old video honours Mansfield war hero
But perhaps one of the best known of these was the town’s Wilfred Dolby Fuller, a Lance Corporal in the 1st Battalion Grenadier Guards who was awarded a Victoria Cross (VC) in 1915 for single-handedly preventing the escape of around 50 German troops from the trenches.
The war hero was born in Greasley, near Eastwood, in 1893, but moved to Mansfield as a child. He worked in the local mining industry before the First World War, and was medically discharged from the army in 1916.
He later became a policeman in Somerset.

Hide AdHaving been presented with his Victoria Cross by King George V at Buckingham Palace on June 4 1915, a civic reception and presentation to Lance Corporal Fuller was later held in his home town in 1917, which is shown in the video above.
