Fears that HS2 trainline will lead to job losses in Tibshelf
FEARS have been raised about what impact a controversial high speed train line will have on job security for people working in Tibshelf.
Last month, the Department of Transport revealed the route for the second part of its HS2 railway line - which they say will create thousands of new jobs and reduce the journey time from Nottingham to London to just 51 minutes.
But the line is expected to pass through Tibshelf prompting concern from workers in the village who say it could have an impact on their place of employment.
Tibshelf resident Tracy Pepper is a cleaner at Adelphi Precision at the Saw Pit Lane industrial estate and the proposed route suggests that the line could cut across the estate.
She said: “I know they are talking about creating 100,000 jobs but they are not saying how many are going to lose jobs.
“If it does create jobs then fine - but will it provide jobs in areas where we are losing out? It’s not going to stop in Tibshelf.”
Tracy’s husband works for another company at the same industrial estate and she is worried that both of them could lose their jobs and their income if the ambitious HS2 proposal gets the go-ahead because businesses might be forced to relocate to alternative areas.
She also said that while the project is set to create new jobs, they might not match the skills of people who live in the area.
“My husband refurbishes shopping trollies - he’s been doing it for 19 years,” she says.
“It’s what he’s experienced at doing.”
The high speed train line is set to link London to Birmingham. There will also be routes to Leeds and Manchester and if the project given the go-ahead, it is expected to be completed by 2032/33.
Bosses at the Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire Chamber of Commerce say it could unlock as much as £3.8billion in economic benefits for the region.
