A dangerous motorist who was involved in a head-on crash in Kirkby-in-Ashfield has been banned from driving for three years and handed a suspended prison sentence.

Nottingham Crown Court heard how Lee Wood, 34, of no fixed address, pleaded guilty to dangerous driving and failing to provide a specimen for analysis.

Officers were called to a crash on the B6021 Penny Emma Way on the night of Boxing Day, December 26, 2019, according to Nottinghamshire Police.

Police stated Wood was seen driving a Volkswagen Golf on the wrong side of the road for about 200 metres before the crash with a Ford Focus which was heading the other way.

He was arrested at the scene before he and the other driver were taken to hospital for treatment.

Wood, who refused to provide a specimen of blood for examination while he was at the hospital, according to police, was sentenced on Friday, February 14, at Nottingham Crown Court.

He was given a three-year driving ban, an 18-month suspended prison sentence and he was ordered to pay £250 costs.

He must also take an extended driving test when his disqualification expires.

Police Sergeant Carl Holland, of Nottinghamshire Police, said: "Wood’s dangerous driving could easily have resulted in more serious consequences. He could have have killed someone as a result of his actions.

"Nottinghamshire Police will take all steps to get drivers off the road who drive dangerously and put the safety of other road users at risk."
