Countdown to Christmas lights switch-on

Residents have started the countdown to the Christmas lights switch-on in Mansfield with just 60 days to go today.

And thousands of people are expected to flock to the big event on Sunday, November 19.

There will be entertainment in the town centre throughout the afternoon including live music, street entertainers, food, a firework show, a laser light show and plenty of prize giveaways.

Other attractions include craft activities for children in the Four Seasons shopping centre at Buzzy B club, before the big stage show at 3.30pm in the town centre.

Kate Allsop, Mansfield mayor,said: “The Big Switch On is something people in Mansfield and surrounding areas look forward to every year.

“We are proud of the Christmas light displays we have and the event is a great way for people to come together and get into the festive spirit.

“This year, for the first time, not only will there be fireworks but a laser light show, so be prepared for a spectacular sky in the town centre.”

Special guests joining the festivities include the star-studded cast of Palace Theatre pantomime Jack and the Beanstalk, as well as Father Christmas himself.

This year’s panto cast includes comedian and ex-Neighbours actor Mark Little and former Casualty actress Rebecca Wheatley, as well as Mansfield comedy favourite Adam Moss.

The Christmas tree will be put up ahead of the switch on in Market Place.

This year there it be a 34ft Norwegian spruce, grown in Birmingham.
