Selston left to rue missed chances in Derby defeat
Selston FC's search for their first points of the new United Counties League Division One season continued as they suffered a 2–0 defeat away to local rivals South Normanton Athletic on a hot afternoon in Derbyshire.

Manager Lee Stevenson was forced into two changes from the opening-day defeat at Harrowby United. New signing Tom Cox, who recently joined from Melbourne Dynamo, was handed an immediate debut in goal in place of the unavailable Branon Meehan, while Mason England returned to the starting line-up for the holidaying Jake Payling. Striker Tom Batterham was named amongst the substitutes for the first time this season.
The hosts made the perfect start, taking the lead after just two minutes. A hopeful ball forward found the feet of the South Normanton striker, and as he looked to turn, Ty Short inadvertently clipped his heels inside the area. Referee pointed straight to the penalty spot, and Deveraux calmly converted beyond the diving Cox to hand the home side an early advantage.
The remainder of the first half developed into a fiercely contested midfield battle. Selston gradually grew into the game and enjoyed the better spell of possession, but found themselves frustrated by a series of robust challenges from the hosts. One of the visitors' first strong tackles, by Colt Reynolds, resulted in a yellow card, much to the frustration of the travelling support.
Selston fashioned several promising openings without making the breakthrough. Nick Hines raced onto an excellent through ball from Ben Moore, only for his final touch to let him down, while Arthur Pashley also found space inside the penalty area but opted to cut inside rather than shoot, allowing the opportunity to disappear.
Having looked the more likely side to score, Selston were dealt a significant blow on the stroke of half-time. On 43 minutes, South Normanton patiently worked the ball through midfield before slipping a perfectly weighted pass between the central defenders for Alex Seale, who kept his composure to slot beyond Cox and double the advantage.
Selston responded positively after the interval and continued to press for a route back into the contest. While they enjoyed long spells of possession, the visitors struggled to turn their territorial advantage into clear-cut chances. Hines again threatened on a couple of occasions, while Ty Short produced a powerful driving run from deep before seeing his effort comfortably gathered by the home goalkeeper.
Despite their endeavour and commitment, Selston were unable to seriously test the South Normanton defence, who stood firm to preserve their clean sheet.
The final whistle confirmed a second successive defeat to begin life back in the United Counties League, but there were enough encouraging passages of play to suggest the points will soon follow once the final-third quality improves.
Manager Lee Stevenson said: "It's another frustrating afternoon because I don't think the scoreline reflects the balance of the game. We gifted them an early goal, then conceded another at the worst possible time just before half-time, and that made the task incredibly difficult.
"There were plenty of positives in our general play. We competed well, moved the ball nicely for long periods and got ourselves into some good areas, but football is decided in both penalty boxes and that's where we need to improve. We have to be more ruthless when the chances come and cut out the mistakes that are costing us at the other end.
"We're only two games into a long season with a group that is still settling. Nobody is panicking. The attitude and work rate are there, and if we keep performing with that level of commitment, the results will come."
