The Covid-19 pandemic meant that 2020 was a very challenging year for Nottinghamshire’s businesses, forcing some beloved establishments to close their doors – and speeding up the process for others.

The impact of the pandemic was felt by pubs, restaurants and shops alike across the county.

And as we continue through the third national lockdown please try to shop local and support Nottinghamshire’s businesses if you possibly can.

In June last year, the Frankie & Benny's restaurant at Portland Retail Park closed its doors to the public for good. The restaurant's staff left a touching note to the public in the window which read: “With a heavy heart we are sad to announce the closure of our restaurant. We have been operating on the site for the past seven years. We have served many friendly faces and as much as we would like to carry on serving all you lovely people but unfortunately we are unable to do this."

Frankie & Benny’s owner The Restaurant Group (TRG) is one of the biggest restaurant operators in Britain and also owns the popular restaurants Chiquito and Wagamama. In February last year, TRG announced plans for the closure of up to 90 Frankie & Benny's and Chiquito branches by the end of 2021, with the intention of converting 12 of these sites into Wagamama outlets.

The Sutton-in-Ashfield branch closed in May last year, forcing customers to travel four miles to the firm’s nearest branch in Mansfield. Barclays has cited lack of footfall as one reason for the closure, and say that only 115 customers use the branch exclusively for their banking.

Petscene in Sutton-in-Ashfield closed its doors in October last year, after trading on the site for almost 40 years. Cliff Hinks, 66, and Dave Ansell, also 66, opened the store in April 1981, opening two more (in Warsop and Mansfield) along the way, but made the decision to retire because trading was 'not the same it was’ with competition from the internet and less footfall on the street.
