Sutton Rambling Club: Buxton Ramble - Sunday, 30th August

The club continue their popular spectacular walks with a 12 mile linear ramble through a wide variety of Peak District countryside, covering dales, pretty villages, water features, moorland, old railway lines, an ancient spa town, fantastic viewpoints and remains of its industrial past.

There should be a shorter walk option and for potential new members the first ramble is free with no coach fare to pay

The walk begins just above Taddington on the A6 with a gradual climb along Senners Lane and Pillwell Lane, past Chelmorton Low.

We then turn along the remains of Grove Rake where lead ore was once extracted.

Our route then traverses the delightful village of Chelmorton with several attractive water features and the ancient parish church of St John the Baptist.

We then proceed past the local sewage works to a footpath above Bullhay Dale, then a short stretch of road-walking takes us to Shallow Grange, and then to the top of Back Dale.

Onward then to the short but pretty Brierlow Dale and cross the A515 at Brierlow Bar.

A brief sojourn across fields brings us to quarry country.

We pass under the old Buxton to Ashbourne railway line still used to transport limestone from the surrounding quarries.

Then we turn north and follow the railway for a short distance and soon see Harpur village.

After climbing the track bed to the former Cromford and High Peak Railway, we join Grin Low road to reach one of the Peak Districts spectacular secrets.

We view the amazing Tufa calcite terraces at Countess Cliff which hopefully will be gleaming brightly in the sunshine.

We then climb past this feature and head across Stanley Moor past a disused reservoir to the tiny hamlet of Ladmanlow.

We then cross the main road and head out onto the Moors towards Burbage Edge. More spectacular views as we attain the trig point at 500 metres above sea level.

The final section of this lovely ramble is a steady descent into Buxton, past Beet Wood and Watford Farm before walking through the Cavendish golf course.

Finally a walk through the grounds of the Buxton Pavilion take us to the market place where the coach will pick us up for a 6.30pm departure home.

There should be ample time to enjoy refreshments in Buxton before departure.

In the morning, the coach departs from the "Staff of Life " pub in Sutton-in-Ashfield at 9.17am and from the Bancroft Lane end of Stockwell Gate outside Asda in Mansfield at 9.30am. There are other pick up points en route.

The coach fare is £14, accompanied juniors free.
