Thoresby Colliery in the spotlight at new photographic exhibition

Thoresby - The End Of The Mine is the name of a new exhibition that can be seen at Mansfield Museum from Saturday, January 9 until Saturday, February 27.

This will be an exhibition of evocative photographs by Chris Upton recording the site and the people of Thoresby Colliery, prior to its closure.

The exhibition will feature over 50 large framed black and white images and an audio visual presentation including miners talking about their memories of Thoresby, mining in general and the strike of 1984-85.

Opening times are Monday-Saturday from 10am-5pm. Entry is free to Mansfield Museum.

Chris Upton is a photographer from Southwell and has, over the last year, been undertaking a photographic project to record Thoresby Colliery, the site, buildings and people, prior to its closure in July 2015.

A limited edition book, 33 x 24cm, contains 138 pages and over 200 evocative black and white images. Softback and printed on quality paper, the book provides an enduring record of Thoresby in its final days and would be appreciated by anyone associated with Thoresby or mining in Nottinghamshire.

The book is priced at £25 and is now available to purchase at or at the exhibition
