Guys and Dolls a surefire bet for great night out

Evergreen musical Guys and Dolls is heading to the Lyceum next week, direct from a West End run.

The production won six nominations in the Olivier Awards, the British theatre world ‘Oscars’, and has a cast including TV and stage stars Richard Fleeshman and Maxwell Caulfield and West End leading ladies Louise Dearman and Anna O’Byrne.

The show has long been a favourite with musical fans and the 1955 Hollywood film had an all-star cast including Marlon Brando, Jean Simmons, Frank Sinatra and Stubby Kaye.

Stubby played Nicely-Nicely Johnson, who performed the show-stopping number, Sit Down You’re Rocking the Boat.

    Guys and Dolls is a joyous and vibrant celebration of Prohibition-era New York and first premiered on Broadway in 1950, capturing the optimism and energy of post-World War Two America.

    This hugely popular and multi award-winning musical is based on the colourful stories of American journalist Damon Runyon, renowned for his vivid fictional depictions of the gamblers, hustlers and nightclub singers of New York.

    It features some of Broadway’s greatest musical numbers including My Time of Day and Luck be a Lady.

    The story follows gambler Nathan Detroit, who desperately needs money for an illegal dice game, and he needs it fast.

    Enter notorious gambler Sky Masterson, a guy who can never turn down a bet, and straight-laced missionary Sarah Brown, a doll with a heart of ice.

    Nathan’s wager is that Sky has to romance Sarah by taking her to Havana for dinner and in return he’ll provide a dozen ‘sinners’ for Sarah’s mission.

    Surely this is one bet Nathan absolutely can’t lose?

    Richard Fleeshman, familiar to audiences from his appearances in Coronation Street, Call The Midwife and Ghost the Musical, plays Sky Masterson, with Maxwell Caulfield (Grease 2, Emmerdale, The Colbys) as Nathan Detroit, Louise Dearman (Wicked, Evita) as Adelaide and Anna O’Byrne (Love Never Dies) as Sarah Brown.

    The production was created by Chichester Festival Theatre, which has lined up Sheffield Theatres artistic director Daniel Evans to take over this summer.

    Guys and Dolls heads to the Lyceum Theatre next Tuesday to Saturday.
